Security: from ENEA five hi-tech jewels

A wireless, tele-operated robot autonomously performing a mission in a place inaccessible to man. Softwares able to predict the direction in which a radioactive cloud propagates or how people move in an emergency situation. A wireless, tele-operated robot autonomously performing a mission in a place inaccessible to man. Softwares able to predict the direction in which a radioactive cloud propagates or how people move in an emergency situation.

These are just few of the high-tech jewels deployed by ENEA to improve nuclear security, recently tested at the ENEA Casaccia Research Center in  a simulated scenario.

The have been developed under the project EDEN, the largest collaborative European project aiming at countering the chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear warfare threat, which includes, besides ENEA, 35 leading european institutions in the security field.

Interview to Luigi De Dominicis – ENEA ”European nuclear energy facilities operate at the highest power level and this requires competent technical support to reach a high level of operational safety. ENEA has been asked to develop and test technologies at its facilities thanks to its recognized role as one of the leading european research bodies”

Two additional ENEA technological solutions for nuclear safety are under test at the Casaccia facility. A 3D laser scanner able to operate inside the “pool” of a  nuclear reactor to assess possible damage and a long distance laser tool to measure contamination in the air, soil and people.
