Anti terrorism Tests at the ENEA Frascati Research Center.

Within the Project EDEN, one of the largest ever, collaborative EU funded projects on security, ENEA organized, together with the Fraunhofer Institute, a two day demo event on safety and prevention from terrorist attacks, with the objective of providing technologies and tools to ensure the safety of people and the environment, protect the integrity of critical infrastructures and the transportation system and respond to emergency situations.

The tests were focused on CBRNe response procedures, that is to say a threat of chemical, biological,  radiological and nuclear agents and explosives. Their primary aim was to test innovative tools and methodologies to avoid physical damage to people, infrastructures and the environment.

Luigi De Dominicis (ENEA) – “The European project Eden, financed by the Commission, has received 36 million euro in funding. ENEA has a great commitment to developing new technologies and organizing key demonstrations”.

Two fictitious scenarios of terrorist attacks and five technologies deployed by ENEA.

Alessandro Dodaro (ENEA) “The sensor we have tested this morning, called Active Neutron Interrogation (ANI), is a measurement method capable of characterizing samples of unknown origin and composition by means of non-destructive methods, that is to say without an operator handling the sample,  with the objective of  detecting  “dirty bombs”,  devices combining  the risk of radioactive materials and conventional explosives.

On that occasion another ENEA technology, previously used to detect  “hidden” characteristics of artworks such as the Sistine Chapel, was tested. It’s the RGB-ITR laser, that has allowed to get the 3D model car in which potential terrorists placed “dirty bombs”.

It’s based on laser technologies, ILS included

Antonio Palucci (ENEA) – “These sensors can operate at a distance ranging from a few meters up to almost one hundred meters. It’s a technology unique in the world”.

The Robot PRASSI works in support of the ILS laser

Claudio Moriconi ( ENEA) – “It’s a robot carrying different types of sensors, positioned so as to facilitate their functioning. The device must orientate them automatically, and for that man cannot go near those high-risk zones, therefore it must guarantee the functioning of sensors even when physical obstacles are present”.

During the tests, ENEA presented RADCAL, a software capable of predicting the effects of contamination from the explosion of a “dirty bomb”.

At the demo event  there were international representatives of border police, radioprotection institutes, fire department and other branches of the military, whose mission is to provide emergency response in-situ.
